Raritan Township earns bronze Sustainable Jersey recertification for seventh time
RARITAN TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — Raritan Township has again been recognized for its environmental leadership, receiving bronze-level Sustainable Jersey recertification during the organization’s annual luncheon at the New Jersey League of Municipalities Conference in Atlantic City on Nov. 18.
This marks the seventh time the township has achieved bronze status and the fourth consecutive year it has been recertified. Raritan Township is among 471 participating communities — nearly 83% of all New Jersey municipalities — that met Sustainable Jersey’s rigorous requirements.
The township was first certified in 2011 and has since implemented a wide range of sustainability initiatives through its Environmental Commission and Green Team. Efforts include waste reduction and recycling programs, greenhouse gas reduction strategies, natural resource protection, and other environmentally focused improvements.
“This would not be possible if it weren’t for the tremendous hardworking, dedication and commitment of our entire team,” said Mayor Bob King. “This is a result of all the great work our entire team does. Thank you for continuing to make our township a great place to live.”
To maintain certification, municipalities must submit documentation demonstrating their sustainability practices, including ordinances, policies, programs, and facility upgrades. Raritan Township previously earned bronze status in the 2014, 2017, 2022, 2023 and 2024 certification cycles.
According to Maureen Jones, program coordinator for Sustainable Jersey, the township earned 290 points in this year’s evaluation — well above the 150-point threshold required for bronze.
The Environmental Commission now has its sights set on achieving silver-level certification, which requires 350 points.
