Red Cross urges New Jersey residents to give blood, platelets during busy holiday season

NEW JERSEY — The American Red Cross is urging residents to donate blood or platelets during the busy holiday season, warning that record travel and winter weather can strain the nation’s blood supply at a time when patients continue to rely on lifesaving care.

The organization said donations often decline in late December as people travel or adjust schedules, even though hospitals require a steady supply year-round. Blood types O, A negative and B negative are especially needed, the Red Cross said.

“Medical treatments don’t take a holiday,” the Red Cross said, encouraging donors to schedule appointments before traveling to help prevent shortages caused by canceled or missed donations.

The Red Cross is offering incentives to encourage donations during the season. Donors who give blood or platelets from Dec. 19, 2025, through Jan. 4, 2026, will receive a limited-edition Red Cross long-sleeved T-shirt, while supplies last. Those who donate between Jan. 1 and Jan. 25, 2026, will be automatically entered for a chance to win a trip for two to Super Bowl LX in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Appointments can be made through the Red Cross Blood Donor App, by visiting RedCrossBlood.org or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). Individuals who are unable to donate blood are encouraged to consider making a financial contribution to support the Red Cross’ humanitarian mission.

To be eligible to donate, individuals generally must be at least 17 years old — or 16 with parental consent where permitted by state law — weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health. Donors must bring a blood donor card, driver’s license or two other acceptable forms of identification.

The Red Cross also encourages donors to save time by using its RapidPass system, which allows donors to complete pre-donation reading and health history questions online on the day of their appointment.

More information about donating blood or platelets, eligibility requirements and current incentives is available at RedCrossBlood.org.
