Rooted in celebration: Hunterdon County Commissioners join Arbor Day tree planting ceremony
HUNTERDON COUNTY, NJ — Commissioners Jeff Kuhl and Susan Soloway participated in the 26th Annual Arbor Day ceremony on Friday, April 25, organized by the Hunterdon County Shade Tree Commission.
The event took place at the Main Branch County Library as part of the global Arbor Day celebration, which has been observed for 153 years.
“This Arbor Day tree ceremony is a good way for the community to come together and promote environmental stewardship. Planting a tree is a simple but powerful way to make a small difference right here in Hunterdon County. Thank you to the Shade Tree Commission for organizing this annual celebration,” Kuhl said.
The festivities began at 10:30 a.m. with a special story time for children aged 3 and up, followed by the planting of an Overcup Oak tree at 11:00 a.m. to honor the legacy of Arbor Day. The Overcup Oak was selected for its ability to thrive in various soil conditions and its striking dark green foliage, which turns a vibrant yellow-brown in autumn.
“There is something truly special about Arbor Day – it brings people together to celebrate the wonders of nature. From the children’s story time to the planting of the oak tree, this event not only educates but also inspires us all to be good stewards of the environment,” Soloway said.
Arbor Day serves as a reminder of the critical role trees play in protecting the environment by reducing soil erosion, moderating temperatures, purifying the air, and supporting wildlife habitats. Trees also produce oxygen and provide renewable resources such as pulp for paper, wood for building, and firewood for heat, while adding beauty and shade to communities.
