Route 31 northbound ramp to I-78/Route 22 westbound closed and detoured this weekend in Hunterdon County

CLINTON, NJ (Hunterdon County) – The Route 31 northbound ramp to I-78/Route 22 westbound is closed and detoured this weekend as the Route 31, I-78/Route 22 to Grayrock Road pavement reconstruction project advances in Clinton.

The northbound ramp from Route 31 to I-78/Route 22 westbound is closed and detoured for milling and paving until 12:00 noon on Monday, November 18.

Route 31 northbound ramp to I-78/Route 22 westbound Detour:

  • Motorists on Route 31 northbound wishing to take the ramp to I-78/Route 22 westbound/Phillipsburg will be directed to continue on Route 31 northbound
  • Take the ramp to Route 31 southbound/Clinton/Flemington
  • Stay right on the ramp to continue to Route 31 southbound/Clinton/Flemington/Park & Ride
  • Turn right onto Old Highway 22/Route 173
  • Cross Center Street and continue straight towards Clinton
  • Stay left to take the ramp to I-78/Route 22 westbound

The $24.8 million federally funded Route 31, I-78/Route 22 to Grayrock Road pavement reconstruction project will replace deteriorated concrete pavement with full depth asphalt reconstruction of the roadway in Clinton, Hunterdon County. In addition, the project will realign the intersection of Center Street eastbound and Route 31 southbound to improve sight distance. The acceleration lane from I-78/Route 22 westbound to Route 31 northbound will be extended to provide more space to merge.

The project also includes drainage improvements, guiderail replacement, lighting and overhead sign installation, and concrete deck repairs on the bridges. The project is expected to be completed by fall 2026.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website for construction updates and real-time travel information.
