Route 31 northbound right lane, shoulder closures planned in Clinton for pavement project
CLINTON, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — The right lane and shoulder on Route 31 northbound in Clinton will be closed for approximately one week beginning Friday as part of an ongoing pavement reconstruction project in Hunterdon County, state transportation officials said.
The closures are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Friday, May 15, and continue through 6 a.m. Friday, May 22, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation.
Officials said the right lane and shoulder will be closed between Walnut Pond Road and the bridge over Interstate 78 to allow crews to perform Intelligent Transportation System conduit work on the bridge.
The ramp from Route 31 northbound to Interstate 78 eastbound will remain open during construction, officials said.
Motorists were advised to slow down and use caution while traveling through the work zone.
The lane closure is part of a $24.8 million federally funded reconstruction project along Route 31 between Interstate 78/Route 22 and Grayrock Road in Clinton.
According to NJDOT, the project includes replacing deteriorated concrete pavement with full-depth asphalt, improving drainage, replacing guiderails, installing lighting and overhead signs, and repairing bridge decks.
The project also will realign the intersection of Center Street eastbound and Route 31 southbound to improve sight distance. In addition, the acceleration lane from Interstate 78/Route 22 westbound to Route 31 northbound will be extended to improve merging conditions.
Construction is expected to continue through fall 2026, transportation officials said.
NJDOT noted the schedule could change because of weather or other factors. Real-time traffic updates and construction information are available at 511nj.org.
