Route 31 ramp to I-78 eastbound in Clinton to close for one week starting tonight

CLINTON, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — The Route 31 southbound ramp to I-78 eastbound is scheduled to close Friday night for a week-long detour as work continues on the Route 31, I-78/Route 22 to Grayrock Road pavement reconstruction project in Hunterdon County.

The closure will begin at 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15, and is scheduled to last until 11:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation. Crews will perform a full-depth reconstruction of the ramp.

Motorists on Route 31 southbound who need to access I-78 eastbound can follow one of two detour routes:

  • Exit toward Annandale/U-turn after Finnagel’s Restaurant, turn right onto Beaver Avenue/County Route 626, then turn right to take the ramp to I-78/Route 22 eastbound.
  • Continue on Route 31 southbound, take the jughandle for U-turns and left turns after the Regional Road/North Hunterdon High School traffic signal, turn left onto Route 31 northbound, and take the ramp to I-78 eastbound.

The $24.8 million federally funded project will replace deteriorated concrete pavement with full-depth asphalt reconstruction, realign the intersection of Center Street eastbound and Route 31 southbound to improve sight distance, extend the acceleration lane from I-78/Route 22 westbound to Route 31 northbound, and complete drainage, guiderail, lighting, sign, and bridge deck repairs. Completion is expected by fall 2026.
