Route 31 ramps at Center Street to close Friday through Monday morning in Clinton for water main work

CLINTON, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — The Route 31 southbound ramps to and from Center Street are scheduled to be closed from Friday afternoon through Monday morning as work continues on a pavement reconstruction project in Clinton, Hunterdon County, transportation officials said.

The closures are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16, and continue until 5 a.m. Monday, Jan. 19, for water main installation, officials said. The affected ramps are the Route 31 southbound ramp to Center Street and the Center Street ramp to Route 31 southbound. Access to businesses on Center Street will be maintained, officials said.

Under the posted detour for motorists traveling on Route 31 southbound to Center Street, drivers will be directed to turn right onto Grayrock Road before Center Street, then turn left onto Center Street, officials said.

For motorists traveling from Center Street to Route 31 southbound, drivers will be directed to turn onto Grayrock Road and then turn right onto Route 31 southbound, officials said.

The work is part of the $24.8 million federally funded Route 31, Interstate 78/Route 22 to Grayrock Road pavement reconstruction project. Officials said the project will replace deteriorated concrete pavement with full-depth asphalt and includes plans to realign the intersection of Center Street eastbound and Route 31 southbound to improve sight distance.

Other improvements include extending the acceleration lane from I-78/Route 22 westbound to Route 31 northbound, drainage upgrades, guiderail replacement, lighting and overhead sign installation, and bridge deck repairs, officials said. The project is expected to be completed by fall 2026.

Officials cautioned that work schedules can change due to weather or other factors and encouraged motorists to check 511nj.org for updates and real-time travel information.
