Sussex County Community College receives $428K in federal funding to expand allied health programs

NEWTON, N.J. (Sussex County) — Sussex County Community College has been awarded $428,000 in federal funding to expand its allied health curriculum in response to growing demand for healthcare workers across northwest New Jersey.

The funding was secured through a Fiscal Year 2026 Congressionally Directed Spending project selected by U.S. Sen. Cory Booker and included in the final federal appropriations bill signed into law.

College officials said the investment will support the purchase of new equipment for allied health programs scheduled to launch within the next year.

The funding will allow the college to modernize instructional laboratories, enhance hands-on learning opportunities and ensure students are trained using industry-relevant technology.

Officials said the expansion is aimed at addressing workforce shortages in critical healthcare fields while creating accessible career pathways for residents of Sussex County and surrounding communities.

“Healthcare employers across Northwest New Jersey continue to express the need for highly trained professionals,” said Cory Homer, president of Sussex County Community College. “This funding allows us to respond strategically, expanding program offerings, increasing capacity, and preparing students for immediate entry into high-demand careers that directly impact the health and well-being of our communities.”

The new equipment will support workforce development programs and provide training opportunities for traditional college students, adult learners and current workers seeking to advance their careers.

College officials said the initiative aligns academic programs with employer demand and strengthens the regional healthcare workforce pipeline.

Sussex County Community College said it remains focused on providing affordable and accessible educational opportunities while supporting economic growth and meeting the evolving needs of healthcare employers throughout northwest New Jersey.
