Route 94, Route 23 lane closures scheduled Friday night as rockfall project begins in Sussex County
HARDYSTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Sussex County) — Portions of Route 94 and Route 23 are scheduled for lane closures Friday night as work begins on a $6.7 million rockfall mitigation project in Hardyston Township, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation.
Beginning at 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28, through 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, Route 94 southbound is scheduled to close near Beaver Run Road, with traffic maintained in an alternating pattern.
The closure is necessary for crews to mill the centerline rumble strip and shoulder edge line, restripe the roadway and reposition construction barriers on Route 94 northbound.
By Saturday morning, traffic is expected to be shifted toward the southbound shoulder, with a work zone established along the northbound shoulder. The project will begin with vegetation removal on the northbound side of Route 94.
Route 23 is also scheduled for a lane closure with alternating traffic from 8 p.m. Friday until 10 a.m. Saturday while crews mill the centerline rumble strips. The work is in preparation for a future traffic shift, with NJDOT expected to provide advance notice before that shift is implemented.
Motorists are advised to slow down, use caution and expect delays while traveling through both work zones.
The work is part of the federally funded Route 23 and Route 94 rockfall mitigation project, which is designed to improve safety at two locations: Route 23 southbound between mileposts 36.1 and 36.2 and Route 94 northbound and southbound at milepost 34.6.
The project includes tree clearing, rock scaling, guiderail installation, roadway milling and a pavement overlay. Work is expected to begin along Route 94, with the overall project scheduled for completion in summer 2028.
