RV camper fire near home quickly contained in Sussex County

WALPACK TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Sussex County) — Firefighters were called to Walpack Township early Monday after reports of an RV camper fire that was initially feared to involve a nearby residence, authorities said.

The Sandyston Township Fire Department said crews were alerted at about 3:45 a.m. for what was reported as a camper fire. Dispatchers later received conflicting information suggesting a residential structure might also be involved, prompting additional resources to be sent because of the uncertainty and the distance to the scene, the department said.

When crews arrived, they found a camper fully engulfed about 30 feet from a home, with multiple vehicles nearby, the department said. A propane tank attached to the camper was beginning to ignite, officials said.

Firefighters stretched a hose line and knocked down most of the fire within minutes, the department said.

No information about injuries was released. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
