Senator Pennacchio to introduce bill to establish Government Efficiency Department
NEW JERSEY – Senator Joe Pennacchio (R-26) Monday announced his intention to introduce legislation that would establish the New Jersey Department of Government Efficiency to combat the extremely wasteful state spending seen in recent years.
“As inflation continues to ravage our economy, New Jerseyans need all the help they can get and the first step is identifying wasteful State spending,” said Pennacchio. “With this bill, not only can we start to chip away at our exacerbated affordability crisis by cutting wasteful spending and ensuring efficiency, we can also ease the financial burden for our constituents across the Garden State by lowering the onslaught of taxes and fees.”
The legislation would form a commission that, within 1 year of formation, would be responsible for streamlining government bureaucracy, reducing unnecessary red tape, eliminating government redundancies and overlapping functions, and identify areas of cost reductions.
“In just over a year from now, we will have a new Governor that will be taking office and our budget is projected to have billions in deficit—we should greet the new Governor with a blueprint of where and how we can find cost savings and improve efficiency,” Pennacchio said.
The Commission would consist of:
- 1 member from the New Jersey Department of the Treasury
- 1 member from the New Jersey State Chamber of Commerce
- 4 public members of whom the Senate President, Assembly Speaker, Senate Minority Leader, and Assembly Minority Leader will each appoint one.
- 1 public Member appointed by the Governor
