Somerset County man convicted in beer bottle attack on Super Bowl Sunday

SOMERVILLE, NJ (Somerset County) – A Somerset County jury has convicted 38-year-old Junior Suriel-Gonzalez of Manville, N.J., on multiple charges following a violent incident at a local bar on Super Bowl Sunday, February 11.

After a week-long trial, the jury found Suriel-Gonzalez guilty of third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, and disorderly persons simple assault. He now faces up to five years in New Jersey State Prison when he is sentenced on January 10, 2025.

The incident occurred on the evening of February 11, when Suriel-Gonzalez was asked to leave a Manville bar. He then armed himself with a beer bottle and attacked a bar employee, swinging the bottle over the victim’s head. He was quickly subdued and escorted out of the establishment but fled the scene in his vehicle.

Manville Police apprehended Suriel-Gonzalez several blocks away in the early hours of February 12, leading to his arrest.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant Prosecutor Ryan A. Quiñones, with the support of Litigation Paralegal Tiffany Gordon.
