Somerset County prosecutor warns of rise in vehicle burglaries, urges residents to lock cars
SOMERSET COUNTY, N.J. — Somerset County Prosecutor John P. McDonald and Chief of County Detectives Francisco Roman Jr. are warning residents about a sharp increase in motor vehicle burglaries reported across multiple municipalities in the county.
McDonald said the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Burglary Task Force, working with local police departments, has seen a noticeable rise in vehicle break-ins, many involving unlocked cars and occurring overnight or in the early morning hours. Officials said the incidents have affected residential neighborhoods and parking areas in several towns.
Authorities urged residents to take basic precautions, including locking vehicles even when parked in driveways or residential areas and removing valuables that could attract thieves. Items to take out of cars include wallets, purses, jewelry, cash and electronics, officials said.
McDonald and Roman also urged residents to report suspicious activity to local police, saying quick reporting can help prevent crimes and identify those responsible.
Anyone with information related to burglary investigations is asked to contact the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Burglary Task Force at (908) 575-3300 or submit tips through the STOPit app, authorities said. The app allows anonymous reports, including videos and photos, and can be downloaded for free through the Google Play Store or Apple App Store using access code SOMERSETNJ, officials said. Tips also can be provided through the Somerset County Communications Center at 1-888-577-TIPS (8477), authorities said.
