State Sen. Jon Bramnick calls for statewide e-bike task force to assist NJ law enforcement
TRENTON, N.J. — State Sen. Jon Bramnick is calling on the New Jersey attorney general to establish a statewide e-bike task force to help local law enforcement agencies enforce the state’s e-bike laws and address public safety concerns.
Bramnick, a Republican who represents parts of Middlesex, Morris, Somerset and Union counties, said police departments need additional resources, coordination and guidance as e-bikes become increasingly common on New Jersey streets, sidewalks and bike paths.
“E-bikes are here to stay, but that does not mean we should ignore the serious safety concerns that come with their increased use,” said Senator Bramnick. “Too many serious injuries have occurred in e-bike accidents. We need to make sure our laws are not simply on the books – they need to be understood and enforced.”
New Jersey’s e-bike laws include licensing and registration requirements that took effect July 1 under a law enacted in 2025. The law requires low-speed electric bicycle riders to be licensed and the bicycles to be registered with the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission.
“Local police departments should not have to navigate these challenges on their own,” Senator Bramnick said. “A statewide task force can give them the tools and coordination they need to protect pedestrians, motorists, and e-bike riders alike.”
Bramnick said the goal of the proposed task force would not be to prevent people from using e-bikes but to help ensure riders comply with state law and communities have the resources needed to address safety issues.
“We have established rules for a reason,” Senator Bramnick said. “When violations put people at risk, there must be meaningful enforcement. The Attorney General can play an important role in bringing our law enforcement agencies together and making sure New Jersey is taking this issue seriously.”
