Steinhardt bill expanding insurance coverage for lipedema treatment advances in committee

TRENTON, N.J. — Legislation sponsored by state Sen. Doug Steinhardt that would require health insurers to provide coverage for lipedema treatment advanced this week after receiving approval from the Senate Commerce Committee.

Steinhardt, R-Hunterdon, Somerset and Warren, said the bill aims to improve access to medically necessary treatment for patients suffering from lipedema, a chronic condition that can cause painful fat buildup, swelling and reduced mobility.

“Lipedema is a serious medical condition that can rob women of their mobility and quality of life, yet insurers too often treat medically necessary care like it’s optional,” said Sen. Steinhardt. “No one should have to suffer while bureaucrats deny the care their doctors recommend but too many families are forced to fight their insurance company while also fighting a painful and debilitating disease. This bill is about compassion, fairness, and making sure families can focus on healing instead of battling insurance red tape.”

The legislation was introduced after Steinhardt heard testimony from Ileana Schirmer about the challenges her daughter, Nina Schirmer, faced while trying to access treatment for the condition.

Nina Schirmer, a leading advocate for the bill, said undergoing lipedema surgery personally demonstrated the importance of insurance coverage for treatment.

“After undergoing lipedema surgery myself, I experienced firsthand how life-changing this treatment can be,” said Nina Schirmer, the key advocate for this legislation. “This bill represents hope for women in New Jersey living with lipedema. No woman should have to fight for access to medically necessary care that can restore mobility, reduce pain, and improve quality of life. I would like to thank Senators Steinhardt and Ruiz for sponsoring this legislation, as passing this bill will help women across New Jersey access the care they need.”

Supporters of the measure say the bill would help reduce financial barriers for patients seeking treatment while ensuring insurers recognize lipedema care as medically necessary rather than elective.

The bill now advances for further consideration in the New Jersey Legislature.
