NEW JERSEY — New Jersey ranks as the second worst state for doctors in 2026, according to a new report released by personal finance company WalletHub ahead of National Doctors’ Day on March 30.

The study evaluated all 50 states and the District of Columbia using 19 metrics designed to measure financial opportunities and working conditions for physicians. Factors included average wages, hospital availability and health care system quality.

New Jersey ranked 50th overall, placing it near the bottom nationwide.

Among the key findings, the state ranked 49th for average annual physician wages adjusted for cost of living and 49th for hospitals per capita. It also placed 45th for projected physicians per capita by 2032 and 45th for malpractice award payouts per capita.

Additional rankings included 39th for average monthly starting salary, 39th for malpractice liability insurance rates, 28th for insured population rate and 29th for projected population age 65 and older by 2030.

WalletHub said the report is intended to identify where doctors can achieve the best financial outcomes while also highlighting conditions that may affect patient care.
