Sussex County Community College offers tuition-free high school equivalency program

NEWTON, N.J. (Sussex County) — Sussex County Community College is offering a tuition-free pathway for individuals seeking to earn a New Jersey high school diploma through its High School Equivalency program.

The program provides free instruction in reading, writing and mathematics, along with coursework in science and social studies. Classes are designed to prepare students to take the New Jersey High School Equivalency Test, known as the HiSET, and earn a state-issued diploma.

Graduates of the program can pursue college, postsecondary training or expanded employment opportunities, according to the college.

“Our HSE Program is flexible, friendly, and fun,” said Program Coordinator Sara Gorst. “Students work independently on the areas where they need the most support, with experienced instructors available to help every step of the way. Students who demonstrate proficiency on the HiSET practice tests are encouraged to register for the official exam at Sussex to earn their New Jersey State Diploma.”

ABE/HSE classes begin March 16 and April 20 and will be held in the Student Center, D Building, Room D304. Registration is by appointment only.

Students must be at least 16 years old to enroll. Those ages 16 or 17 must provide signed parental or guardian consent. Individuals ages 16 to 21 also must complete a “Consent of Non-Enrollment in School” form available through the program.

To schedule a registration appointment, visit sussex.edu/hse, call 973-300-2158 or email hse@sussex.edu.

Out-of-state residents may enroll in classes at the college but must complete the official high school equivalency exam in their state of residence.

The program is funded by the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development and is offered at no cost to participants. Interested students are encouraged to complete the online registration form to be added to the waitlist.
