Sussex County Community College public safety academy graduates 92 in fire, rescue programs
NEWTON, N.J. (Sussex County) — Sussex County Community College’s Public Safety Training Academy marked its annual graduation ceremony with 92 graduates from its firefighter, Rescue Task Force and fire officer development programs, school officials said. More than 300 guests attended the ceremony, celebrating graduates who officials said will help support volunteer fire companies throughout Sussex County.
The event was hosted by Public Safety Training Academy Director John Dixon, with fellow firefighters, family members and friends in attendance, officials said. The Franklin Fire Department served as the honor guard and the Bergen County Firefighters’ Pipe and Drums provided music. SCCC student Danielle DeBattista performed the national anthem, officials said.
SCCC President Dr. Cory Homer delivered welcoming remarks, and retired Deputy Chief Warren Whitley gave the keynote address, officials said.
“This program is the result of the incredible dedication of our graduates, their families, friends, and instructors, all of whom have given their time and energy to make this program possible. It embodies the true spirit of volunteerism and service. Volunteer firefighting is one of the last great examples of genuine volunteerism in our country, demanding extraordinary skill, courage, and a readiness to face serious risk,” Homer said.
Homer also thanked Dixon for his leadership at the academy, officials said.
Officials provided a breakdown of the graduating class that included 34 Firefighter 1 and 2 graduates, 18 Firefighter 2 stand-alone graduates, seven Fire Officer 1 and 2 graduates, five chief officer development graduates, eight fire officer development graduates, seven Rescue Task Force operator graduates, and 13 emergency telecommunicator graduates. The class also included participants from out-of-county and out-of-state organizations, officials said.
The college and academy said they plan to continue expanding course offerings and services for law enforcement, firefighters, EMS personnel and the community. More information is available at sussex.edu/psta.
