Sussex County Community College to redesign library into a cutting-edge learning hub
NEWTON, NJ (Sussex County) – Sussex County Community College (SCCC) is proceeding with the transformation of its library into a dynamic Learning Commons, which aims to enhance academic success and foster collaborative learning.
This innovative upgrade reflects SCCC’s commitment to providing cutting-edge resources and a supportive environment for students to thrive. The Board unanimously approved the $1.7 million project of Trustees on March 25th.
The Library Science Building will be converted into a vibrant Science and Learning Commons Building, with the second-floor library evolving into a modern hub for collaboration and discovery spanning 10,500 sq. ft. The newly transformed Learning Commons will serve as a central hub for student learning, offering a variety of spaces and services, including technology, tutoring, academic advising, and study areas.
Key Features of the Learning Commons Include:
- Collaborative Workspaces: Designed for group discussions, team projects, and peer learning.
- State-of-the-Art Technology: Access to computers, printers, and multimedia equipment to support research, presentations, and other academic tasks.
- Tutoring and Academic Support: Students seeking additional help can use dedicated spaces for one-on-one tutoring sessions, writing assistance, and academic advising services.
- Quiet Study Zones: Individual study spaces for students who need focused, quiet environments to complete coursework and study.
“By converting our library into a Learning Commons, we are not just upgrading a space—we are creating an environment where students can actively engage with their education, collaborate with peers, and access the resources they need to excel,” said Dr. Cory Homer, Interim President. “We are excited to offer our students this innovative space that will empower them to take their academic experience to the next level.”
The transformation of the library into the Learning Commons is part of a broader effort to provide SCCC students with the tools and resources they need to succeed academically. The initiative also reflects the College’s dedication to adapting to the changing landscape of higher education, where collaborative learning, technology integration, and student support are critical to student success.
The Learning Commons renovation is expected to begin immediately after the spring graduation and be completed in 4-6 months.
