Sussex County farm animal sanctuary permanently closing, seeks urgent assistance rehoming animals
Patchwork Pastures 501 (c)(3) farm animal sanctuary located in Wantage NJ permanently closing seeks urgent assistance in rehoming potbelly pigs and an Emu.
WANTAGE TOWNSHIP, NJ (Sussex County) – Patchwork Pastures Farm Animal Sanctuary, located in Wantage Township, has announced it will be permanently closing.
After six years of dedicated service to over 200 rescued or surrendered farm animals, the decision to close their doors permanently was a difficult one, made due to a multitude of challenges.
Founded in 2019, the nonprofit organization’s mission of “bringing recovery and nature together” was the first to develop an exclusive Greencare Project Initiative, utilizing animals and nature to promote recovery, reduce recidivism, increase employability, and enhance the quality of life for both animals and humans alike.
Throughout the past six years, Patchwork Pastures’ founders have poured their hearts and souls into the organization. However, drastic changes in the economy and the unwavering physical demands have taken their toll, leaving the agency with no choice but to dissolve. With only two caregivers working full-time jobs to support the majority of the sanctuary, and both facing health challenges, this decision became inevitable.
Most of the animals have been adopted into loving homes that can provide for their needs. However, there are still 44 potbelly pigs and one male emu in need of placement. The potbelly pigs vary in size and age, ranging from approximately 3 to over 6 years old. Some are bonded pairs or trios, while others have special needs. All of the male pigs have been neutered, and they all have wonderful personalities and a love for human companionship. Time is limited for Patchwork Pastures, and they are desperate to re-home the animals as quickly as possible. With a deadline of Oct. 30 they are asking for help to place these animals into loving forever homes.
Patchwork Pastures will be hosting an open adoption day on Saturday, Oct. 12, and Sunday, Oct. 13, from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Interested parties can visit their website at www.patchworkpastures.org to print an application. If printing is not possible, one will be provided on-site. This form must be completed to adopt an animal. All interested families must come prepared to bring their new pig (or pigs) home the same day, with a large or extra-large dog crate per pig, zip ties to secure the cage, and a truck or trailer. Preference will be given to farm owners with potbelly pig experience who are willing to open their hearts and fields to a new forever friend.
Those unable to attend the Oct. 12-13 adoption days can reach out independently by calling 973-222-5162 or emailing info@patchworkpastures.org to schedule alternative appointments.
“Patchwork Pastures extends its heartfelt thanks to our board members, donors, and supporters for their dedication to our mission and support during our years of operation,” officials said.
