Sussex County man pleads guilty to committing robbery in New York
PORT JERVIS, NY (Orange County) – A Sussex County man has pled guilty to committing a robbery in Port Jervis, according to Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler.
Shaheem Hill, 28, of Hamburg Borough, pled guilty on February 5 in Orange County Court to second-degree robbery.
Under the plea agreement, which was announced during the proceedings, the prosecution will recommend Hill be sentenced to 9 years in prison, followed by 5 years of post-release supervision, when he is sentenced on April 16, 2025.
As outlined in court documents and statements made during the proceedings, on December 30, 2023, at 3:45 a.m., Hill and a co-defendant approached an individual on Ball Street in Port Jervis, displayed handguns, and forcibly stole property from the victim, including a laptop, jewelry, and a wallet.
After a police investigation, which included reviewing surveillance footage and executing a judicially-authorized search warrant, the stolen items were recovered at the co-defendant’s residence in New Jersey. During the plea hearing, Hill admitted to forcibly stealing the property and to displaying what appeared to be a firearm during the robbery. The co-defendant previously pled guilty and is awaiting sentencing.
District Attorney Hoovler thanked the City of Port Jervis Police Department for its investigation, which led to Hill’s arrest. He also thanked the Newton Police Department and the Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office for their assistance during the investigation.
“Gun crimes beget violence, and we must hold accountable those responsible for illegally possessing and using firearms,” said Hoovler. “We will continue our pursuit of violent criminals who commit violent crimes, especially those involving the illegal possession and use of firearms. I appreciate the cooperation of law enforcement agencies across state lines to ensure these perpetrators were held responsible for their actions.”
