Sussex County man sentenced to 6 years in prison for robbery in New York

PORT JERVIS, NY (Orange County) — A Sussex County man has been sentenced to state prison after pleading guilty to his role in an armed robbery in Port Jervis, according to Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler.

Douglas Hill, 29, of Newton, was sentenced on May 7 in Orange County Court to six years in prison, followed by five years of post-release supervision, in connection to his guilty plea to second-degree robbery, Hoovler said.

According to court documents and statements made in court, the incident occurred at approximately 3:45 a.m. on December 30, 2023, when Hill and a co-defendant approached an individual on Ball Street in Port Jervis, displayed handguns, and forcibly stole a laptop, jewelry, and a wallet.

Following an investigation by the City of Port Jervis Police Department— which involved the review of surveillance footage and execution of a court-authorized search warrant— investigators were able to recover the stolen items at Hill’s residence in Newton.

During plea proceedings, Hill admitted to forcibly stealing property and displaying what appeared to be a firearm during the robbery. His co-defendant previously pled guilty and was also sentenced to state prison.

District Attorney Hoovler expressed appreciation for the City of Port Jervis Police Department for their work in the case, and also thanked the Newton Police Department and the Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office for their assistance during the investigation.

“We will continue to relentlessly pursue violent criminals who illegally wield, threaten and use dangerous firearms,” Hoovler said. “While I have always and will continue to support the safe and legal possession of firearms by those licensed to do so, the use of these weapons by criminals fuels the violence we see every day.  We must counter such illegal possession by careful policing and committed prosecution.  I thank all of the law enforcement agencies, state, local and across state lines who together ensured that these offenders were brought to justice.”
