Sussex County stylists give free haircuts to 57 children through Project Self-Sufficiency
NEWTON, N.J. (Sussex County) — Dozens of Sussex County children received free back-to-school haircuts this week thanks to volunteer stylists partnering with Project Self-Sufficiency.
Stylists from Mancuso Salon & Spa and Essence Hair Studio donated their time to provide 57 children with haircuts, washes and styling as part of the agency’s annual Back-to-School initiative. The event capped a season of activities for low-income families, including an interactive fair hosted by the Journey Family Success Center at Project Self-Sufficiency earlier this summer.
“Offering free haircuts to children has been a staple of Project Self-Sufficiency’s Back-to-School initiative for many years,” said Deborah Berry-Toon, the nonprofit’s executive director. “We are overwhelmed by the generosity of these stylists who volunteered to work on their day off to assist so many students in need. The children were delighted with their experience, and they all look fantastic.”
Jacqueline Cox, co-owner of Mancuso Salon & Spa, said she and her staff were honored to return for a second year. “What a privilege to see so many transformations and smiling faces in one day,” Cox said. “We are already looking forward to next year and hope to encourage other licensed stylists from the area to join us.”
Project Self-Sufficiency provides services and resources to support low-income families across the region.
