Sussex County unveils mobile health clinic to expand access to services across 24 municipalities

HARDYSTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Sussex County) — The Sussex County Board of County Commissioners has officially introduced a new Mobile Health Clinic, aiming to enhance healthcare access for residents throughout the county’s 24 municipalities.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Thursday, July 24, at the Health Division in Hardyston Township to mark the arrival of the new vehicle. The initiative was made possible through American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding, which was authorized by the Commissioners in 2023 for the Division of Health to purchase the clinic.

Assemblywoman Dawn Fantasia joined Commissioner Director Chris Carney, Deputy Director Jill Space, County Administrator Ron Tappan, Health and Human Services Administrator Christine Florio, and Health Officer and Director Jennifer Shortino for the ceremony.

The mobile unit provides ample space for the Office of Public Health Nursing to store equipment and operate remote clinics. It is expected to increase capacity and accessibility to preventive health services, education programs, and routine clinics—particularly in the county’s more remote areas.

“The Commissioners were excited to invest in something that will directly impact the community,” said Deputy Director Jill Space. “The addition of this Mobile Health Clinic will allow the Office of Public Health Nursing to serve all areas of our rural county and address barriers for our residents such as a lack of reliable transportation.”

The unit will also play a critical role in department-wide health initiatives and emergency preparedness by serving as a fully stocked mobile clinic during public health emergencies.

Officials say the mobile clinic strengthens the county’s mission to promote public health and education while bridging gaps in service for residents facing transportation or accessibility challenges.
