SUV strikes disabled car on I-287 in Morris County, seriously injures man standing outside vehicle, state police say

MORRIS TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Morris County) — A Somerset man was seriously injured early Sunday after being struck when a disabled vehicle he had exited was hit on Interstate 287 in Morris County, according to the New Jersey State Police.

Troopers responded at 3:41 a.m. to the crash near milepost 34.5 in Morris Township, NJSP spokesman Charles Marchan said.

Based on a preliminary investigation, Alejandro Quiles, 49, of Somerset, was driving a Toyota passenger car south on I-287 with passenger Eddy A. Lenardo-Herrera, 32, also of Somerset. The Toyota traveled off the roadway to the right, struck an arrow board, then re-entered the travel lanes before becoming disabled, Marchan said.

Quiles and Lenardo-Herrera exited the vehicle and remained nearby. A Honda SUV driven by Laura Serrano, 23, of Nutley, was traveling south on I-287 and struck the disabled Toyota, which then hit Lenardo-Herrera, according to police.

Herrera sustained serious injuries in the crash, Marchan said. Serrano suffered minor injuries, and Quiles was not injured.

The crash remains under investigation, and no additional information was available, Marchan said.
