Hunterdon County man injured in beaver attack while fishing in Raritan River

RARITAN TOWNSHIP, NJ (Hunterdon County) – A 54-year-old Flemington man was injured in an unusual beaver attack while fishing in the South Branch of the Raritan River on Thursday in Raritan Township

On Nov. 7, at around 5:10 p.m., police and emergency services responded to the area near 1200 County Route 523 after receiving a report of the attack, police said.

According to police, the victim was fishing when he noticed a beaver swimming nearby. After briefly losing sight of the animal, the beaver resurfaced and attacked, biting the victim on both legs. In an attempt to defend himself, the victim was also bitten on his hand.

The man was able to get himself out of the water, and emergency responders transported him to Hunterdon Medical Center for treatment, police said.

Authorities from NJ Fish and Game were notified, and an attempt to locate the beaver was unsuccessful, police said.
