Union County bank robbery suspect arrested, claims to be from Hackettstown

UNION TOWNSHIP, NJ (Union County) – A Union County bank robbery suspect was arrested, and he claimed to be from Hackettstown, according to police.

On Jan. 6, at 11:22 a.m., police received a hold-up alarm from the TD Bank at 995 Morris Avenue near Kean University in Union Township, police said.

Officers responded and their initial investigation revealed the bank had just been robbed by a man who motioned to a bank teller as if he had a gun while stating it was a robbery. The man took money and then fled in a car towards Hillside, police said.

A bank employee alertly got the license plate of the car and gave it to the officers. Detectives also responded to the scene and were able to check the license on the car and ultimately determine the identity of the bank robber. Detectives and plainclothes officers searched in Newark and were able to locate the parked car in Newark, police said.

Detectives and Officers started a surveillance of the car and waited for the suspect to return. After several hours, officers observed the man come out of an apartment building and stopped him, police said.

They confirmed the person they had stopped was the bank robber and placed him under arrest. The bank robber is identified as Kevin Thompson, 64, who gave an address in Hackettstown, but police said he seems to be homeless and was staying with friends.

He was taken back to our Police Headquarters and after speaking with Detectives, he allegedly gave a full confession. Thompson took about $500 from the bank and detectives recovered some of the money in his car, police said.

He was charged with first-degree armed robbery and was taken to the Union County Jail, police said.
