UPDATE: Route 46 wildfire in Warren County 100% contained, burned 100 acres

INDEPENDENCE TOWNSHIP, NJ (Warren County) — A wildfire that ignited along Route 46 in Independence Township on Friday has been fully contained as of 8 a.m. Saturday, according to the New Jersey Forest Fire Service (NJFFS).

The blaze, which scorched 100 acres, prompted a swift and large-scale response from local fire departments and the NJFFS. Fire crews utilized engines, bulldozers, ground teams, and aerial water drops from a Forest Fire Service helicopter capable of releasing 300 gallons per trip.

At the height of the incident, 25 structures were threatened. No evacuations were needed, and only two outbuildings were reported damaged.

Multiple fire towers initially spotted the blaze, allowing crews to quickly triangulate its location near Route 46. Roads impacted by the fire—including Route 46, Tannery Road, and Russling Road—have since been reopened.

Although the fire is now 100% contained, NJFFS crews will continue to monitor the area in the coming days to reinforce containment lines and address any remaining hotspots. Officials warn that smoke may continue to linger until significant rainfall occurs.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. No further updates are expected unless new developments arise, according to the NJFFS.
