Volunteers invited to help restore historic Military Trail on June 7 for National Trails Day

WALPACK TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Sussex County) — The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area and the Walpack Historical Society are inviting volunteers to celebrate National Trails Day® on Saturday, June 7, by helping clean up the historic Military Trail in Sussex County.

The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., starting at Walpack Center on Route 615. Volunteers will assist with clearing brush, lifting objects, and removing trash along the one-mile trail, which dates back to the French and Indian War and the American Revolution.

The trail is rated easy to moderate, with a total elevation gain of 226 feet. Participants are encouraged to wear closed-toe shoes, long sleeves, and long pants, and to bring plenty of water. Snacks will not be provided.

Following the cleanup, attendees are welcome to stay for a history talk about the trail and a guided tour of historic buildings in Walpack Center. All ages are welcome.

Volunteers can sign up at Volunteer.gov or email Madison at mdegerolamo@nps.gov for directions. Because cell service and GPS coverage in the area are limited, organizers recommend bringing written or saved directions.
