Hiker rescued and charged after being found inside viaduct in Warren County

KNOWLTON TOWNSHIP, NJ (Warren County) – Emergency responders were dispatched late Tuesday night to a technical rescue operation in Knowlton Township after a hiker was reported to possibly be trapped near the railroad viaduct on Station Road, according to a post on the Knowlton Township Fire and Rescue Company’s Facebook page.

The call came in at 10:23 p.m., prompting a response from the Knowlton Township Fire and Rescue Company and Portland (PA) Hook & Ladder.

Details surrounding the situation were initially unclear as responders arrived on the scene. In a coordinated effort, two five-person rescue teams were sent to search the railroad bed, while a team of New Jersey State Police (NJSP) Troopers began searching the area underneath the viaduct, authorities said.

After approximately an hour of thorough searching both inside and outside the structure, the individual was found uninjured inside a viaduct support column. The person was subsequently arrested by NJSP for trespassing on state property and was transported by Atlantic EMS to a local hospital for observation, according to the post.

Authorities reminded the public that the Paulinskill and Delaware River Viaducts are state property and are clearly posted against trespassing.
