Warren County woman charged after toddler left unattended in bathtub

PHILLIPSBURG, N.J. (Warren County) — A 28-year-old woman has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child after a toddler was found unresponsive in a bathtub earlier this year, the Warren County Prosecutor’s Office said.

Phillipsburg police responded to the 300 block of Mercer Street around 5:30 p.m. on May 28 for a report of an unresponsive toddler. Patrol officers provided basic life support before transporting the child to St. Luke’s Hospital, Warren Campus, authorities said.

The toddler, who suffered submersion injuries after being left unattended in a bathtub, was later transferred to St. Luke’s Bethlehem Campus and admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit for advanced treatment.

A joint investigation by the Phillipsburg Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division and the Prosecutor’s Office determined that Amber L. Schubert of Phillipsburg was legally responsible for the care and supervision of the child.

Schubert was arrested on Sept. 16, processed, and lodged in the Warren County Correctional Center. She is charged with one count of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child.

Second-degree crimes in New Jersey carry a maximum sentence of 10 years in state prison.
