Watch: State troopers rescue distressed dog from Arthur Kill in Union County
ELIZABETH, N.J. (Union County) — Two New Jersey State Police troopers rescued a distressed dog from the Arthur Kill early Saturday morning after spotting the animal struggling in the water near the Elizabeth Marina.
At approximately 6:30 a.m., Trooper I Michael Buchell and Trooper I Shane McClafferty, both from Carteret Station, responded to a report of a dog in distress in the tidal waterway separating New Jersey and Staten Island.
While patrolling the area, the troopers observed unusual movement in the water and discovered a small dog, believed to be about one year old, battling the strong current.
Trooper McClafferty maneuvered the patrol vessel into position as Trooper Buchell deployed a life ring and rescue blanket to bring the animal aboard safely. The dog was showing signs of fatigue and early-stage hypothermia, prompting the troopers to dry and warm him immediately.
Nicknamed “Oscar the Grouch,” the dog was transported to Carteret Station, where he was evaluated and found to be in good health. Trooper Buchell is currently providing temporary care while authorities work to locate the dog’s owner.
Anyone with information about the dog or his owner is asked to contact Friends of Elizabeth Animal Shelter at 908-820-4242 or 732-413-5006.
