MOUNT OLIVE TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Morris County) — A 24-year-old Lake Hopatcong woman was seriously injured after she stepped into Route 206 to attend to a deer that had been struck and was then hit by a vehicle Tuesday night in Mount Olive Township, according to police.
Police responded to Route 206 near Patricia Drive at about 11:43 p.m. for a report of a pedestrian struck.
Officers found the woman lying along the side of the roadway. An investigation determined that a deer had been struck and was in the roadway, police said.
The woman stepped into the road in an attempt to attend to the animal and was struck by a white Mazda traveling south on Route 206, according to police.
The woman sustained significant injuries and was treated at the scene by Flanders EMS and St. Clare’s Hospital paramedics. She was then flown by helicopter to Morristown Medical Center for treatment.
The driver, a 29-year-old Flanders woman, remained at the scene and was not injured, police said.
Mount Olive police, the department’s Investigations Division and Traffic Unit were assisted at the scene by the Morris County Sheriff’s Office and Flanders Fire Department.
The crash remains under investigation.
