2-alarm fire breaks out at four-story residential building in Sussex County

HAMPTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Sussex County) — Firefighters from multiple Sussex County communities responded Wednesday evening to a structure fire at a multi-story residential building on Route 519 in Hampton Township, authorities said.

According to Hampton Township Fire & Rescue, emergency crews were dispatched shortly after 5 p.m. following reports of a possible fire at the property.

When firefighters arrived, they found smoke coming from the upper level of the four-story residential structure. A second alarm was requested because of the conditions and initial reports that occupants could still be inside the building.

Fire officials said a search of the structure began immediately while crews worked to locate the source of the fire. All occupants were later confirmed to have safely evacuated the building.

Firefighters from neighboring departments assisted with fire suppression, ventilation, overhaul operations, utility control and checks for fire extension throughout the structure.

Crews also established water supply operations to support firefighting efforts as ladder trucks operated at the scene.

Emergency medical personnel from Hampton, Newton and Fredon provided firefighter rehabilitation during the incident.

The New Jersey State Police, Sussex County Fire Coordinators, Sussex County Fire Marshal’s Office, Hardyston and Ogdensburg also assisted at the scene or provided coverage for the township during the emergency.

Firefighters remained on scene for about three hours before returning to service, officials said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Hampton Township Fire Prevention Office and the Sussex County Fire Marshal’s Office.
