3 animals rescued from Sussex County house fire

NEWTON, NJ (Sussex County) – Three animals were rescued early Friday morning from a house fire in Newton.

Newton firefighters were called at around 3:55 a.m. to a structure fire reported at Hillside Terrace, according to the New Fire Department.

Upon arrival, police confirmed a working fire and indicated that three animals may be trapped inside the building. As a result, the Newton Police Dispatch Center elevated the incident to a working fire assignment, prompting additional fire departments and resources to respond, officials said.

Upon arrival of the fire chief, visible flames were emerging from the front porch of the residence, authorities said.

While firefighting efforts were underway, the fire quickly spread to the front bedroom on the second floor, officials said.

Crews also located and rescued all three animals, who were found to be suffering from smoke inhalation but were otherwise stable, authorities said.

All units cleared the scene by 6:40 a.m., officials said.

The cause of the fire wasn’t immediately clear.
