$4.4 million upgrades underway at NJDOT maintenance yard on Route 46 in Morris County
MORRIS COUNTY – The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) maintenance yard on Route 46, located at the border of Washington Township and Mount Olive Township in Morris County, known as the Hackettstown Maintenance Yard, is undergoing significant renovations to enhance its operational capacity and readiness for the upcoming winter season.
The $4.4 million project, which began in May, aims to transform the facility into a more efficient hub for equipment repairs and salt storage, NJDOT spokesperson Steve Schapiro told RNJ.
The yard is used to repair equipment such as plows and to house salt. While NJDOT has not stopped using the yard, there is more activity in the fall and winter as it is considered a winter yard. The yard will continue to serve as a strategic location for maintenance operations and equipment readiness.
Renovations include replacing the salt storage dome, which held 500 tons of salt, with a new structure designed to store a minimum of 1,500 tons of road salt. The existing salt storage building will be demolished. A new 3-bay unheated vehicle storage building will be constructed, and a new generator will be installed to provide backup power to the facility in the event of a power outage.
A new high-efficiency LED lighting system will be installed to provide adequate nighttime illumination of the facility, including lighting units for the existing flagpoles.
Officials expect the project to be completed by the end of the year.
