7-year-old trick-or-treater burned when costume catches fire from lit candle in Hunterdon County

LAMBERTVILLE, NJ (Hunterdon County) – A Halloween night celebration took a frightening turn when a 7-year-old girl sustained burn injuries after her costume caught fire due to a lit candle in Hunterdon County.

The incident occurred around 8:00 p.m. on North Union Street in Lambertville while the child was trick-or-treating with her parents.

As the family approached a home to collect candy, the child’s costume came into contact with a lit candle that was placed along the steps. Fortunately, a fellow trick-or-treater noticed the flames and quickly intervened, using their hands to pat out the fire.

Neighbors and the homeowner rushed to assist the child until emergency services arrived on the scene. The Lambertville-New Hope Ambulance and Rescue Squad, along with the Lambertville Fire Department, provided immediate medical attention.

The young victim suffered first and second-degree burns and was transported to Capital Health (Helene Fuld) trauma center for evaluation and treatment.

The child was later released from the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. The good Samaritan who helped extinguish the flames sustained minor burn injuries to their hands but declined medical treatment.
