
Police: Machete found inside car during DWI stop in Sussex County
BYRAM TOWNSHIP, NJ (Sussex County) – Police found a machete in a vehicle being operated by a New York man charged with driving while intoxicated.
On July 28, at 11:08 p.m., an officer observed a vehicle failing to maintain its lane, as well as driving on the shoulder of Route 206 South, police said.
The officer then stopped the vehicle and while speaking to the driver, who was identified as Damian Sul, 51, of Brooklyn, the officer felt he may be intoxicated, police said.
Sul was asked to perform several standardized field sobriety tests, which he allegedly failed and was arrest for driving while intoxicated. During a search of the passenger compartment of the vehicle, officers located several open containers of alcohol and a machete, police said.
Sul was transported to the Byram Township Police Station where he consented to and failed two breath tests, police said.
Sul was charged with driving while intoxicated, failure to maintain lane, careless driving, reckless driving, open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, failure to possess insurance card, failure to possess registration, and fourth-degree possession of a weapon with no lawful purpose. He was then released to a family member pending a court appearance, police said.
