Bill to reschedule 2025 primary election signed into law
NEW JERSEY – Governor Phil Murphy recently signed bipartisan legislation sponsored by Senator Robert Singer (R-30) to reschedule New Jersey’s 2025 primary election from June 3 to June 10 to accommodate for the Jewish holiday, Shavuot.
“As legislators, it is our responsibility to ensure every eligible voter can participate in our democracy without undue barriers,” said Singer. “By rescheduling New Jersey’s June primary to occur on June 10, we are accommodating voters observing Shavuot and honoring the rich diversity of our State. With the Governor’s signature, this change ensures that voters are not forced to choose between exercising their right to vote and their deeply held religious traditions.”
Shavuot, a significant Jewish holiday, spans three days from June 1 through June 3, during which observant individuals refrain from writing, driving, traveling, and using electronics. Consequently, observant Jewish voters would have faced challenges when casting their vote in the June 3 primary.
Singer’s bipartisan bill, A-5152/S-3965, will reschedule the primary to June 10 to accommodate the observance of the Shavuot holiday in 2025.
