Readington police warn residents about phone scam involving fake federal agents

READINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — The Readington Township Police Department’s Detective Bureau is warning residents about an ongoing phone scam involving individuals impersonating federal agents.

According to a department advisory, scammers are contacting victims by phone and falsely claiming to be federal agents. They typically report an urgent legal issue and demand immediate payment to avoid arrest or other legal consequences. In some cases, scammers have sent couriers to victims’ homes or meeting locations to collect money.

Authorities emphasize that real federal agents will never:

  • Demand immediate payment over the phone
  • Ask for payment in cash or via courier pickup
  • Threaten arrest if you don’t comply instantly

Residents are urged to protect themselves by:

  • Hanging up immediately on suspicious calls
  • Never sharing personal or financial information
  • Avoiding handing over money to anyone claiming to be a courier
  • Contacting their local police department if they are unsure or feel threatened

Anyone who believes they may have been targeted by this scam is encouraged to contact the Readington Township Police Department at (908) 534-4031 for non-emergencies or dial 911 in an emergency.
