Gottheimer joins House Democrats urging bipartisan action on gun violence
WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Rep. Josh Gottheimer, D-N.J., has joined more than 130 House Democrats in signing a letter urging Speaker Mike Johnson to work across party lines on legislation aimed at reducing gun violence.
The lawmakers’ call comes in the wake of a deadly school shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis.
In their letter, the members cited federal data showing that gun violence is the leading cause of death for children, teenagers and law enforcement officers. They also referenced prior bipartisan laws addressing firearms, including the National Firearms Act of 1934, the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act of 1993, the 1994 Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act, and the 2022 Bipartisan Safer Communities Act.
The members wrote that while those measures “saved lives,” they believe more action is needed to protect children and communities.
Gottheimer, who represents New Jersey’s 5th Congressional District and serves on the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, said the effort reflects a continued push for bipartisan cooperation on the issue.
