Route 23 ramp in Kinnelon to close Wednesday for bridge project

KINNELON BOROUGH, N.J. (Morris County) — The Route 23 southbound ramp to Hamburg Turnpike/County Route 694 will be closed and detoured Wednesday as work advances on the $78.2 million Route 23 Bridge replacement project in Kinnelon Borough, officials said.

The closure is scheduled from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. to allow crews to install a temporary bridge that will later be used during the demolition and reconstruction of the Route 23 Bridge over the Pequannock River and Hamburg Turnpike. Route 23 through traffic will not be affected, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation.

During the closure, motorists traveling on Route 23 southbound who want to access Hamburg Turnpike, High Crest Road or Bloomingdale will be detoured onto the ramp for Kinnelon/Butler, left onto Kinnelon Road/CR 618 (which becomes Kiel Avenue), left onto Park Avenue, and then right onto Main Street, which becomes Hamburg Turnpike/CR 694.

The project, located between mileposts 16.6 and 17.2 on the border of West Milford in Passaic County and Butler and Kinnelon in Morris County, includes replacement of the bridge over the Pequannock River, Hamburg Turnpike and railroad tracks, as well as drainage and utility upgrades. Completion is expected in fall 2028.

Transportation officials cautioned that the schedule is weather-dependent and subject to change. Motorists are advised to check 511nj.org for real-time travel information and construction updates.
