Roxbury Fire Company reinstalls and sounds historic siren after nearly 30 years
ROXBURY TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Morris County) — A long-lost piece of Roxbury’s fire service history returned Sunday as Fire and First Aid Company 2, located in the Landing section of the township, reinstalled and sounded its firehouse siren for the first time in nearly 30 years.
The siren, located outside the firehouse, was reactivated at 5 p.m. Sunday after being out of service for decades.
“This siren hasn’t been in use for nearly 30 years,” the department said. “Decades ago, it was the way firefighters were notified of emergency calls before pagers and modern alert systems were introduced.”
Fire officials emphasized that the siren will no longer be used for emergency alerts. Instead, it will sound only during special occasions such as parades, funerals, memorial services, and community events.
“We’re proud to bring back a small piece of Roxbury’s fire service history and tradition,” the department said. “Thank you for your continued support of Roxbury Fire Department Company 2.”
