Driver rescued as car ignites after crashing into pole in Sussex County
BYRAM TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Sussex County) — A driver was pulled from a burning vehicle Monday after crashing into a utility pole on Sparta Stanhope Road, according to the Byram Township Fire Department.
Fire officials said crews were first dispatched for a report of a vehicle that struck a pole with airbag deployment. While units were en route, the call was upgraded to a car fire with downed wires and entrapment.
A Byram Township firefighter who lives nearby arrived directly at the scene and was able to remove the trapped driver from the vehicle before fire crews arrived.
Once on scene, firefighters established command and began extinguishing the fire. The driver was taken to a hospital for treatment, but the extent of injuries was not released.
The crash remains under investigation.
The fire department thanked all responding agencies for their quick actions.
