Two separate crashes minutes apart on Route 31 in Warren County send four people and a dog to hospitals, police say

WASHINGTON, N.J. (Warren County) — Two crashes occurring about 15 minutes apart on Route 31 Sunday afternoon sent four drivers and a dog to area hospitals, though the incidents were not related in any way, according to Washington Township police.

The first crash took place at approximately 2:42 p.m. at Route 31 and Park Avenue in Washington Borough. Police said a 1978 Fiat 131, driven by a 68-year-old Washington man, was making a left turn from Park Avenue onto Route 31 when it appeared to fail to yield and struck a 2022 Chevrolet Traverse traveling northbound. The Traverse was driven by a 63-year-old Port Murray man.

The Fiat’s driver was transported by the Washington Emergency Squad to a landing zone, then flown by New Jersey State Police NorthSTAR medevac to St. Luke’s Hospital in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The driver of the Chevrolet was taken by the Oxford Emergency Squad to Hackettstown Medical Center.

Responding units included Washington Township police, Washington Emergency Squad, Oxford Emergency Squad, Washington Borough Fire Department, NorthSTAR medevac, the Warren County Communications Center and Mike’s Auto Body. Police said the crash remains under investigation.

The second crash occurred at approximately 2:57 p.m., near the Dairy Queen in Washington Township, involving a 2014 Hyundai Sonata driven by a 33-year-old Staten Island man and a 2003 Ford F-150 driven by a 67-year-old Glendora man.

A preliminary investigation found the Hyundai was traveling northbound on Route 31 and attempted a left turn onto Broad Street when it struck the southbound Ford head-on, police said.

The Hyundai’s driver was transported by the Washington Emergency Squad to St. Luke’s Anderson Hospital in Easton, Pennsylvania. The Ford’s driver was taken by the South Branch Emergency Squad to Hunterdon Medical Center in Flemington.

Police added that a dog injured in the Hyundai was transported by officers to Harmony Animal Hospital for treatment.

Assisting agencies included Washington Emergency Squad, South Branch Emergency Squad, Washington Borough Fire Department, Washington Township Fire Department, the Warren County Communications Center and Mike’s Auto Body. The second crash also remains under investigation.
