ShopRite launches annual Check-Out Hunger campaign to support local food banks

ShopRite has kicked off its annual Check-Out Hunger campaign, a holiday-season fundraiser that encourages shoppers to make donations at checkout to help stock local food banks during their busiest time of year. The campaign runs now through the second week of the New Year.

The launch follows the Community FoodBank of New Jersey’s (CFBNJ) 25th Annual Turkey Drive, held Saturday, Nov. 22, during which CFBNJ President and CEO Elizabeth McCarthy visited the ShopRite of Livingston to promote both the food collection effort and the start of the Check-Out Hunger campaign.

The back-to-back initiatives build on the $1.25 million in food and financial support that ShopRite Partners In Caring recently provided to regional food banks to assist families affected by the federal government shutdown and uncertainty surrounding SNAP benefits.

During the Turkey Drive, customers donated frozen turkeys, holiday staples and cash, all of which will help CFBNJ distribute Thanksgiving meals to families across New Jersey.

“We’re deeply committed to addressing food insecurity because our stores are owned and operated by families who are part of the communities we serve,” said Alexandra Emery, Manager of Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility for ShopRite. “Our associates are passionate about supporting Check-Out Hunger, and every donation made at checkout helps strengthen local food banks at a time when demand is especially high. Together with our customers, we can ensure more families have access to meals throughout the holiday season.”

ShopRite said this year’s campaign is especially important as food insecurity continues to affect many families statewide. Customers can contribute by adding a donation at checkout, and many stores will host additional fundraising events and food drives to further boost food bank resources.

As the holiday season begins, ShopRite is inviting shoppers to help fight hunger by supporting the Check-Out Hunger campaign or participating in in-store drives.
