Lane closures, alternating traffic planned on Route 53 in Denville Monday night

DENVILLE TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Morris County) — Motorists traveling on Route 53 in Denville should expect lane closures and alternating traffic Monday night as a pavement preservation project advances in Morris County, transportation officials said.

Beginning at 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 22, through 6 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23, Route 53 will have lane closures with alternating traffic between Estling Lane Road/Luger Road and Green Lane/Menagh Avenue. The temporary traffic pattern is needed to restripe the roadway and install construction barriers to shift traffic and establish a work zone on Route 53 southbound.

Drivers are advised to slow down, use caution and expect delays during the overnight work.

By 6 a.m. Tuesday, traffic on Route 53 southbound will be shifted to the left onto the northbound side of the roadway, while Route 53 northbound traffic will be shifted to the right onto the shoulder. The traffic configuration will allow crews to begin drainage pipe replacement, basin installation, curb and sidewalk replacement, and pavement reconstruction on the southbound side.

The traffic shift is expected to remain in place for approximately one month.

The work is part of a $5.3 million federally funded project to restore about 2.5 miles of pavement on Route 53 between Pondview Road in Parsippany-Troy Hills and Hall Avenue in Denville. The project also includes guiderail updates, sidewalk and ADA-compliant curb ramp upgrades, and safety and operational improvements at the Route 53–Fox Hill Road/Lackawanna Avenue intersection.

The project is expected to be completed in late summer 2026.

Officials said the schedule is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to visit www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time traffic information.
