NJ Transit resumes Montclair-Boonton Line service after train collision injures 17

MONTCLAIR TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Essex County) — NJ Transit rail service on the Montclair-Boonton Line resumed in both directions Saturday morning following a collision between two trains that caused a minor derailment and left 17 people with non-life-threatening injuries, according to NJ Transit.
The incident occurred at about 6:47 p.m. Friday west of Bay Street in Montclair, where two trains on the Montclair-Boonton Line reported making contact, NJ Transit said. The collision resulted in a minor derailment, officials said.
There were reports of 17 injuries, all described as non-life-threatening.
NJ Transit said its president and CEO Kris Kolluri and senior staff responded to the scene along with NJ Transit Police, who are leading the investigation.
“Our primary focus during this incident is the safety of our passengers, our employees and our first responders,” NJ Transit said in a statement.
The National Transportation Safety Board is expected to conduct an independent investigation once its personnel arrive on scene, NJ Transit said.
As of Saturday morning, rail service on the Montclair-Boonton Line had resumed in both directions.
RNJ has reached out to the National Transportation Safety Board for additional information but had not received a response as of publication.
