Clover Hill Dairy expands cheese recall over listeria risk; distribution includes New Jersey

NEW JERSEY — Clover Hill Dairy has expanded its recall to include all Clover Hill Dairy brand cheese products because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The Mechanicsville, Maryland-based company said the products were sold through its retail market, at farmers markets and through third-party distributors in several states, including New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina and New York, as well as Washington, D.C.

The recalled products may also have been distributed under other brand names, including KESSO, QUESOS LA RICURA, IZALCO, DE MI PUEBLO and RIO LINDO. Consumers are advised to check product packaging for Clover Hill Dairy manufacturer permit number “24-128,” when available.

All Clover Hill Dairy brand cheeses currently on the market are included in this recall. Recalled products include the following:

According to the FDA, Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals may experience symptoms including high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. In pregnant women, listeria infections can cause miscarriages and stillbirths.

The recall notice states that nine illnesses, eight hospitalizations and one death have been linked to the recalled soft cheese products.

Consumers are advised not to eat, sell or serve the recalled cheese products and should return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
