Warren County resident places third at national ophthalmic College Bowl

BRANCHBURG TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Somerset County) — A Warren County resident studying at Raritan Valley Community College earned a third-place finish at a national competition for ophthalmic science students earlier this month.

Hunter Nicholaysen of Belvidere placed third in the United Opticians Association College Bowl, held March 13-16 during Vision Expo in Orlando, Florida. The annual event brings together ophthalmic professionals and students from across the country for education, networking and industry showcases.

The College Bowl, sponsored by EssilorLuxottica, is a quiz-style competition featuring questions on topics including eye anatomy and physiology, optics, contact lenses, fabrication and dispensing.

Nicholaysen is scheduled to graduate from RVCC in May with an associate degree in ophthalmic science. She currently works in the optical field as an apprentice optician and is following her mother’s path toward becoming a licensed optician.

Raritan Valley Community College offers both an associate degree program in ophthalmic science and an apprenticeship certificate option.
